The History Of The Bloody Mary
The origins of the Bloody Mary have been debated at length, but here’s our favourite version:
French bartender Fernand Petiot claimed to have invented the Bloody Mary in 1921 while working at the New York Bar in Paris, which later became Harry’s New York Bar, a favourite hangout for Ernest Hemingway and other American ex-pats. Originally just vodka and tomato juice, the cocktail was first called a "Bucket of Blood."
Some say the Bloody Mary was named after a server named Mary at a saloon called The Bucket of Blood in Chicago, while others believe it was named after Queen Mary Tudor of England. We prefer the latter story, so the ‘Bloody Mary’ on our Spicer labels was painted by Kate’s mum, Dawn Ogden White.
